Manager of Planning

As one of the first municipalities to adopt a Community Planning Permit System in Ontario, Huntsville is at the forefront of innovative planning. Reporting to the Director of Development Services, the Manager of Planning plays a key leadership role in crafting planning policies, driving major planning initiatives, and overseeing development approvals that will define how Huntsville grows.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing professional planning advice and interpretation on matters related to planning policy documents and projects to council, external agencies, staff, the general public and the development industry, in accordance with the obligations and competencies specified as a professional planner.
- Develop and implement planning strategies that balance growth with environmental sustainability, economic prosperity, and community well-being.
- Undertake policy planning studies and special projects such as Official Plan reviews, Community Planning Permit System reviews, Secondary Plans, Community Improvement Plans, Heritage Conservation Plans and other policy matters.
- Prepare and present detailed reports and implementation documents for consideration by Council on policy matters, special projects and other planning matters.
- Lead an exceptional team, mentoring and empowering them to excel while fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.
- Plan, organize, direct and control the activities of the Planning Department.
- Prepare annual operating budgets and keep abreast of physical, social and economic conditions, developments and trends in pertinent legislation and by-laws.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must have a minimum of five (5) years of progressive municipal work experience in a management or supervisory role with a University Degree in Planning. Full membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is required. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, effective business planning skills, computer skills and decision-making ability are required as well as a commitment to maintain positive public relations. Proven skills in working with Council, Committees and external parties are also an asset.
This role works in a general office environment with potential for some remote work, and the hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30. You may be required to work additional hours outside of regular office hours Monday to Friday. The salary range (2026) for this position $112,639.80 to $124,178.60.
