Mayor Powers and Decisions

Effective May 1, 2025, the Mayor of the Town of Huntsville is granted additional Mayoral Powers and Duties Under the Municipal Act, also known as Strong Mayor Powers.

Ontario's strong mayor powers, initially introduced in 2022, have been gradually rolled out across the Province. Strong Mayor Powers offer resources to heads of council to accelerate the implementation of key shared municipal-provincial priorities such as housing, transit, and infrastructure.

The Mayor, as head of Council, has special powers and duties under Part VI.1 of the Municipal Act, these include powers to:
  • Propose the Town's budget subject to Council amendments, a Mayoral veto and a Council override process.
  • Bring matters to Council that advance certain Provincial priorities and veto any by-laws passed by Council that may interfere with the advancement of those priorities.
  • Appoint and dismiss the Chief Administrative Officer*
  • Hire and dismiss certain Town department heads*
  • Establish and reorganize Town departments*
  • Create Committees of Council, assign their functions, and appoint Chairs and Vice-Chairs of Committees of Council*

*The Mayor may choose to delegate these specific powers and duties.

The Mayor is required to exercise these powers in writing and make them available to the public, subject to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protections of Privacy Act. A public listing of Mayoral Decisions and Directions is available below.
