Lead Hand Parks, Sports Fields and Locks
With an emphasis on customer service, the Lead Hand Parks, Sports Fields and Locks is responsible for the day-to-day coordination and oversight of sports fields maintenance, parks, trails, horticulture, and locks operations. The position serves as a key operational leader, ensuring municipal outdoor facilities, amenities, and infrastructure are maintained in a safe, functional, and welcoming condition for residents, visitors, user groups, and special events.

Reporting to the Manager of Parks and Cemeteries, and working closely with the Lead Hand Parks, Turf and Horticulture, this position assists in assigning, coordinating, supervising, coaching, and supporting Parks staff in the delivery of daily operations and maintenance activities. The Lead Hand helps prioritize and schedule work based on operational requirements, seasonal demands, maintenance standards, user group needs, and special events, while ensuring staff have the resources, training, and support required to perform their duties safely and effectively.

The Lead Hand is responsible for coordinating sports field maintenance programs, including turf management, field preparation, irrigation systems, inspections, repairs, and event readiness to ensure facilities meet established standards for safety and playability. The position also assists with the maintenance and operation of municipal locks, trails, parks, and associated infrastructure, coordinating inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs while liaising with internal departments, contractors, regulatory agencies, and the public. The position operates and oversees the use of various turf maintenance equipment, utility vehicles, tools, and machinery required to maintain sports fields, parks, trails, gardens, and locks infrastructure.

During the winter maintenance operations season (November 1st to April 15th), the Lead Hand will undertake duties that include plowing and snow removal on municipal sidewalks, and parking lots, as well as supervising Park Attendants performing those same duties.

The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary education in horticulture, recreation, forestry or turf grass, and have three (3) years’ of related management work experience combined with demonstrated hands on experience in equipment operation and cultural practices related to turf grass maintenance. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of personality types coupled with a strong political acuity is required. Expertise and excellence in both written and verbal communication are also required. The successful applicant must also be proficient in the use of MS Office applications such as Excel, PowerPoint and Word and able to learn the use of additional software applications in-use by the Town.

The salary range for this position is $91,000 to $100,339.20 based on a 40-hour work week with evening and weekends, dependent on operations, and includes a comprehensive benefit plan.
