Pre-Meeting Highlights
General Committee Pre-Meeting Highlights – November 26, 2025
This month Committee will hear on a number of subjects, including an update on the possibility of livestreaming sporting events in both the Don Lough and Jack Bionda arenas, and a recommendation to repeal and replace the Discharge of Fireworks By-law.
- Following a deputation from the Huntsville Girls Hockey Association at the September General Committee, staff are seeking authorization to enter into an agreement with LiveBarn. Pending the approval from Council, this streaming service will allow families to watch the sporting events in Don Lough and Jack Bionda arenas live or on demand from any device at any time through the LiveBarn App.
- As a result of a deputation regarding banning the use of fireworks at the June General Committee Meeting, Committee directed staff to review the Discharge of Fireworks By-law. Staff are returning with proposed changes to the Discharge of Fireworks By-law, which were informed by a community survey. Through the survey results, it was noted that the majority of respondents would like to see consumer fireworks either banned completely or only set off on statutory holidays. Consumer fireworks are typically the fireworks that the general public can purchase from a store. Respondents also favoured limiting display fireworks to weekends and statutory holidays. Display Fireworks are high hazard fireworks that are designed for professional, licensed use only. The revised by-law recommends allowing consumer fireworks on certain statutory holidays, and display fireworks on weekends and certain statutory holidays. The by-law also includes a process to apply for an exemption to discharge fireworks outside of the permitted days and times.
