Pre-Meeting Highlights

General Committee Pre-Meeting Highlights – June 25, 2025

This month Committee will hear on a number of subjects, including initiatives to support affordable housing, and protect the environment.

Following Council’s approval of implementing the Housing Action Plan in March, staff are proposing:

  • Developing a program to provide pre-approved secondary residential dwelling unit (SRDU) permit drawings to the public to expedite approvals and encourage the public to build SRDUs in an effort to create more affordable housing.

  • Providing a grant to offset increases in municipal property tax that may result from increasing the value of a property when developing multiple residential rentals. This is intended to incentivize property owners to develop rental units in an effort to increase housing supply.

  • Increasing the maximum tax assessed value of the dwellings that are included in the Town’s Affordable Housing Rebate program. This program includes rebates on Town planning and building fees, as well as other municipal fees, to incentivize building more affordable housing.

In November 2024, the Town of Huntsville co-hosted an Integrated Watershed Management (IWM) workshop with 13 municipalities and the District of Muskoka to discuss watershed management best practices. Staff are requesting Council approval to participate in an IWM working group to enhance the IWM plan, and help maintain and improve water quality health in Huntsville and across Muskoka.

Staff are recommending that Council compensation be updated to the 40th percentile for the 2026-2030 term of Council.
