Notice of Heritage Designation By-law

On July 28, 2025, the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Huntsville resolved to pass By-law 2025-79 to designate the following property under Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. O.18, as amended, as a property of cultural heritage value and interest:

Madill Church

Huntsville, ON

Madill Church has design and physical value as a locally rare and representative example of a square timber log pioneer church. It has historical and associative value as it was built in 1872 on land donated by John Madill, one of the area’s original settlers, and each family in the congregation donated logs for its construction. The property has contextual value as it is adjacent to the Madill Cemetery which contains the graves of many Muskoka pioneers, including Captain George Hunt, the founder of Huntsville.

In accordance with Section 29(8) of the Act, any person who objects to the By-law may appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal by forwarding to the Tribunal and the Town Clerk (at the Town of Huntsville, Clerk’s department, 37 Main Street East, Huntsville ON P1H 1A1 or at clerk@huntsville.ca within 30 days after the date of publication on the Town’s website, a notice of appeal setting out the objection to the By-law and the reasons in support of the objection, accompanied by the fee charged by the Tribunal. A copy of the appeal form is available from the Ontario Land Tribunal website. The last date to appeal this By-law is August 28, 2025.
