Fire Safety

The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department wants everyone to be safe.  Make sure your home is protected with working carbon monoxide and smoke alarms.  Have an escape plan and be prepared.

Carbon Monoxide Safety

Carbon monoxide (CO) is "The Silent Killer".  It is the law to have a working CO alarm in your home.  CO poisoning can be prevented by following a few simple preventative measures.  Keep your family safe by:

  • Installing alarms near sleeping areas
  • Testing your alarms monthly
  • Know the difference between the sound of your CO alarm and your smoke alarm
  • If your CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh air location (outdoors or by an open window or door) and call 9-1-1.  Remain at the fresh air location until emergency personnel arrive to assist you.

Smoke Alarm Safety

Here's what you need to know about fire alarm safety:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home
  • Test your smoke alarms every month
  • If your smoke alarm sounds, go outside, call 9-1-1 and stay outside until emergency personnel arrive to assist you.
  • Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years

Emergency Preparedness in your Apartment and Condo

If you live in an apartment or condo you should be aware of the evacuation and fire safety procedures for the building.  Following the Fire Safety in Apartments and Condominiums guidelines can help keep you and your family safe.
