All construction work on docks and boathouses need a building permit and site plan approval from the Town of Huntsville. A building permit cannot be issued until the site plan has been approved and completed.
Construct a dock or boathouse
A building permit is required for all docks except where:
- Size of the structure is less than or equal to 10 metres square (108 square feet) and
- Is not attached to another structure and
- Does not contain any plumbing
Permit requirements and fees
A building permit for a dock or boathouse includes:
- Site plan approval (if you are doing any new construction or additions to an existing structure in the shoreline area)
- A fully completed building permit application
- Two complete sets of drawings of the planned structure including a building plan, elevation(s), section and structural information
- A site plan drawing that shows existing and proposed structures with distances from property lines
- A letter of approval or permit number from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). - This applies when, proposing to construct or place a structure or combination of structures, that are in physical contact with more than 15 square meters of shore lands (162 square feet). (e.g.: docks with large cribs)
- Fees are based on the "Estimated Project Value of the Construction" at a rate of $10.00 per thousand dollars, with a minimum fee of $100.00
The Town of Huntsville has a dock construction guide package to help home owners meet the related sections of the Ontario Building Code. This package has all of the required forms and can be submitted in place of professional drawings.
