Lead Hand Parks and Horticulture - Full time position

We are looking for the following position to complement our Operations Division:

Lead Hand Parks and Horticulture

  • With an emphasis on and a commitment to customer service, the Lead Hand Parks and Horticulture is responsible for the day to day coordination of parks, trails and horticulture operations, while liaising with other departments, the public and external agencies. The Lead Hand is responsible for ensuring facilities and infrastructures within the parks, trails and gardens are maintained to ensure ongoing operation and safety through the implementation of a maintenance management program. The Lead Hand will also assisting in preparing and monitoring the annual operating budget and capital asset plan, overseeing capital projects, preparing standard operating procedures, supervising direct reports, and carrying out other related human resources duties.
  • During the winter maintenance operations season (November 1st to April 15th), the Lead Hand will undertake duties that include plowing and snow removal on municipal sidewalks, and parking lots, as well as supervising Park Attendants performing those same duties. There is also an on-call requirement for responding to weather related operational responsibilities.
  • The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary education in horticulture, recreation, forestry or turf grass, and have three (3) years’ of related management work experience combined with demonstrated hands on experience in equipment operation and cultural practices related to turf grass maintenance. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of personality types coupled with a strong political acuity is required.  Expertise and excellence in both written and verbal communication are also required. The successful applicant must also be proficient in the use of MS Office applications such as Excel, PowerPoint and Word and able to learn the use of additional software applications in-use by the Town.
  • The salary range for this position is $82,742.40 to $91,208.00 based on a 40-hour work week with evening and weekends, dependent on operations, and includes a comprehensive benefit plan.

Parks Attendant - Full time position

Parks Attendant (3 Vacancies)

  • Reporting to the Lead Hand Parks and Horticulture, the Parks Attendant will ensure the proper care of the Town of Huntsville horticulture system including the performance of planning and maintenance tasks related to the care of municipal gardens, annual and perennial displays, shrubs and trees. The Park Attendant is also responsible for the operation of fleet vehicles-truck and trailer, and other various equipment to ensure the general maintenance and upkeep of the parks systems which includes grass cutting, sports field maintenance, debris pick-up, special events set-up and other duties as assigned. 
  • Between November 1st and April 15th this position will be scheduled as part of the winter operations shift rotation. Shifts will be scheduled in advance of the season across 7 days of the week, (starting as early as 4:00am). Employees are also on call on a rotating basis, 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Additional hours may also need to be worked outside of the scheduled shifts but they will not exceed the daily hours of work legislation as per the Employment Standards Act.
  • Ideally the successful candidate will have completed high school. Horticulture and sports field maintenance experience as well as snow removal experience an asset. Must possess excellent customer service skills and be willing to perform various duties in a range of weather conditions and must have a valid Class G driver’s licence. 
  • The hourly rate for this position is $27.85 to $30.70 and includes a comprehensive benefit package. Hours of work will include weekends, nights and holidays and will be on call during winter operations.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with children (ages 4 -12) and will understand a variety of sports, cooperative games, arts/crafts and summer camp fun.

Relevant Qualifications include:

  • Standard First Aid and CPR and High Five – PHCD are required. One must obtain certifications prior to to start date.
  • NLS certification is an asset.
  • Behaviour Management Systems Training or Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training is an asset.

The Junior Counsellor must have completed CIT programs or have day camp related volunteer or work experience. The minimum age to apply is 14.

Youth Instructor - Part time position

The Town of Huntsville is looking for enthusiastic, customer service-oriented individuals for a part-time position of Youth Instructor.  Under the direction of the Recreation and Leisure Coordinator the Youth Instructor will be responsible for leading and facilitating for youth programs.  Facilitation of programs will include assisting with program develop, creating lesson plans and program delivery. A youth instructor will ensure instruction is clear and modifies/adapts programming for all skill levels and ensures a safe environment for all participants. This role includes communicating with parents and guards, following all town of Huntsville policies and procedures, and having fun. Programs include arts/crafts, sport and active games.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with children (ages 4 -17), would have creative program delivery skills, good interpersonal and organizational skills. You must have the availability to work flexible hours which include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Experience operating self-propelled floor cleaner and other custodial equipment as well as WHMIS and First Aid Certification is considered an asset.   • Five to ten years municipal experience managing a significant engineering/public works/parks/cemetery management division.
  • Knowledge of theory, principles, practices and techniques of public works, traffic engineering, public works maintenance functions, parks and/or cemetery management.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration, including budgeting, purchasing and the maintenance of public records, organization, and functions of an elected Town Council.
  • Ability to plan, direct and integrate broad, comprehensive programs and activities within all disciplines of the division.
