Public Works Department provides the following services:

construction and maintenance of roads, storm sewers,
and sidewalks.
- Capital
works.

and long-term planning and financial control.
- Development
approvals including subdivision, site planning, and
other Planning Department
applications.
- General
control and guidance to the Roads Operation and Maintenance
Division located
at the Madill Church Road Garage.

Scheduled work is subject to change based upon weather conditions and emergency work requirements.

Road Maintenance
Operations
The
Town of Huntsville maintains 350 kilometres of town-owned
and 150 kilometres of District of Muskoka owned roads.
Maintenance
operations are conducted from the Public Works Yard on
Madill Church Road. In addition to winter and summer road
maintenance, personnel are responsible for the maintenance
of the Town's vehicle fleet, storm sewer system, sidewalks,
pavement markings, signage, and contracted services.

Winter Road Maintenance

Reduced Load
Period
From
early March to the end of May, all roads (other than those
with exemptions) will be restricted to load limits of
5 tonnes per axle. These restrictions will remain
in effect for the above noted time period and will depend
on road conditions with signs posted accordingly.
Long range planning for construction works and deliveries
etc. by contractors and businesses should be considered
at this time of year.

Permits
Please note that the following permits are available at the Madill Public Works Yard.
Fees are accepted by debit, cash or cheque.
Entrance
Permit
An entrance permit is required for all new entrances to be constructed as well as any alterations being made to existing entrances onto Town of Huntsville roads. The cost of the entrance permit is $110.00 (includes 2 inspections). A deposit of $110.00 is also required and will be returned to the applicant upon final inspection approval. The fee and deposit can be paid as one lump sum.

Road Allowance
Sign Application & Permit
A sign permit is required for any permanent or temporary sign to be located within the Town of Huntsville right of way (road allowance). The initial fee for a sign permit is $38.50. There is an annual fee of $22.00 per square meter, per sign ($22.00 minimum). The fee for a Cottage Association is $27.50.

Overload/Moving Permit
An overload/moving permit is required for any vehicle traveling on a Town of Huntsville road carrying a load which is over length, height, width or weight as described in the Highway Traffic Act. The cost of an overload/moving permit is $55.00.

Roadway
Occupation Permit
Roadway Occupation permits are required when any work is to be done on a Town of Huntsville road allowance (road or sidewalk). The cost of the Roadway Occupation permit is $70.00.

Storm
Sewer Hook-Up Permit
Storm Sewer Hook-Up permits are required when hooking up to the sewer system. The cost of the permit is $55.00.

Subdivision Development
The Town's subdivision criteria are currently under review and revision. Until Council approves new criteria, developers are asked to reference the following general guides.

Storm Water Criteria
Storm water management criteria in Huntsville have been developed in conjunction with the District of Muskoka and Ministry of the Environment. The Town is currently revising its storm pond design criteria to incorporate esthetic improvements, e.g., side slope criteria, natural vegetative buffers, etc. Contact the Public Works Department at (705) 789-5684, Ext. 3821.
