Huntsville Hosts the World

On June 25 & 26, 2010, Huntsville hosted the 2010 G8 Summit of World Leaders. Our community came together to ensure that we not only succeeded in welcoming the world, but also maximizing this amazing opportunity to facilitate growth, progress, and prosperity. During this time Huntsville was fortunate to receive funding provided by the G8 Legacy Fund and was able to complete a number of exciting G8 Legacy Projects.

The Centennial Centre expansion in Huntsville is now complete and has been coined the name Canada Summit Centre.  Some of the key features of the new facility include: a new facade for the entire complex as well as impressive entry way and lobby, improvements to the pool area and the addition of a new Olympic size multi use arena. In the fall of 2010, the facility added a full time cafe. Oliver's Coffee, Motivations fitness facility, and the Family Health Team Wellness Hub as well as multi-use spaces. In addition, the Active Living Centre was completed in late fall, which was constructed on the east side of the centre featuring a large facility for seniors, youth organizations as well as a main floor banquet facility.

As a result of the funding provided by the G8 Legacy Fund, the Town of Huntsville and the University of Waterloo were able to enter into an agreement to create a facility in Huntsville dedicated to research in the fields of environmental and ecosystem resilience. The prestigious institution now has a beautiful, permanent facility here in Huntsville along the shore of Cann Lake. This marks an exciting new beginning for Huntsville and we honoured that the University of Waterloo has recognized Huntsville as an absolutely ideal place to expand its operations.

For more information on the University of Waterloo Summit Centre for the Environment visit our University of Waterloo education page.

Site Description

The University site is situated within the greater Canada Summit Centre property, centrally located within the scenic Town of Huntsville. The new facility overlooks Cann Lake to the East, and has been constructed some 35 metres above the Town and surrounding area. The unique location of the University is terraced into the rugged local Muskoka topography while being fully serviced by all utilities, municipal sewer and water services, parking and roadway access to the front door. The University site makes up approximately 4.5 hectares of a greater 40 Hectare land parcel which includes a vast amount of rolling wooded parkland, the Muskoka Heritage Village and Historic Portage Flyer Train, Canada Summit Centre, the Active Living Centre, Lions Lookout, a multi-purpose sport field facility and a community walking trail system.

Construction of the facility began in August of 2009 and was completed for use during the G8 Summit in June of 2010.
