Carbon calculators are an online tool used to calculate individual and household carbon dioxide emissions, or greenhouse gas emissions. This determines your carbon footprint. Once you know how much you emit, you can take steps to reduce the size of your carbon footprint through smart consumer choices and sustainable living.
What is your Carbon Footprint?
Calculate your carbon footprint! The Footprint Calculator from the Global Footprint Network is a great place to start. Discover your biggest areas of resource consumption and learn what you can do to tread more lightly on the earth.
Carbon footprints monitor the negative impacts we have on the planet, but that's only half the picture. Handprints measure the positive impacts we can make by doing things differently at home and at work. The Handprinter website will get you started!
Carbon Dioxide (CO2): Your carbon footprint is the total amount of carbon dioxide you emit each year. Greenhouse gasses, which include carbon dioxide, are measured in a unit called "carbon dioxide equivalent" (CO2e) and are usually expressed in metric tonnes (tCO2e) or kilograms (kgCO2e).
Carbon footprints: (or ecological foot prints as they are sometimes called) are a useful tool to help you live a more sustainable lifestyle. A carbon footprint calculator, like the Footprint Calculator from the Global Footprint Network, will help to identify the areas where you can make the most improvements as well as showcase what you're doing well!
Climate Change is one of the defining issues of our time. It is about long-term changes in weather patterns. It has to do with industrial pollution, changing weather, and pollution from vehicles and other modes of transportation. The impacts these changes have on all ecological systems are worrisome; including effects on human health, water levels, invasive species, extreme weather, global warming, biodiversity, and many other relationships in the natural world.
Sustainable Living includes making smart consumer choices and making choices at home, work, and in the community that leave a small footprint. Having a smaller carbon footprint means less carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere which means less adverse impacts on ecological systems. Through collective action in reducing our carbon footprints, we will make a difference. For more information on how you can live a more sustainable lifestyle, visit the Earth Hour page.
Why a Carbon Calculator?
Having a link to a carbon calculator is an initiative of the Huntsville Unity Plan:
Goal #3: Energy Conservation
Strategic Direction 3.1: "Promote all programs available to individuals (seasonal and permanent residents) to decrease energy consumption".
Action: Provide online links where available to calculators that promote consumption awareness.
