Building Permits and Inspections
The Building Department assists developers, contractors, and the general public interested in obtaining a building permit. Prior to granting approval, an Inspector reviews plans submitted for their compliance with the Ontario Building Code.
It is recommended that applicants first investigate what will be required in order to obtain a building permit. If you are building on a waterfront lot, Site Plan approval may be required. All permits require two sets of building plans and a plot plan. Some may also require a copy of your property deed, proof of entrance approval, septic or water and sewer approval and/or payment of development fees (District and/or Town).

Building Permit Fees
Permit fees are based on the "Estimated Project Value of the Construction" at a rate of $10.00 per thousand dollars, with a minimum fee of $100.00, or $1.45 per square foot, whichever is greater.

Building Inspections & Inspection Request Form
Several inspections are carried out during construction and upon completion. It is the responsibility of the permit holder or the agent/contractor acting on the behalf of the property owner to book appointments for the required inspections.
To book an inspection, complete our Inspection Request Form or phone 705-224-8000. The following information is required:
- The building permit number.
- The name of the person who determined the project was ready for inspection.
- Street address of the project.
- What type of inspection is being requested.
- Requested inspection date.
- Preferred time of inspection AM or PM.
Please note that the time requested may not be possible to meet due to scheduling constraints.
Sewage System Permits:
The Building Department is responsible for the approval and inspections of sewage systems within the Town of Huntsville.
Sewage System Permit Fees:
The fee for installing a new system is $400.00. To upgrade or bring an existing system into compliance with the Ontario Building Code, the fee ranges from $100.00 to $400.00.
Permit to Connect to District Water and/or Sewer:
The Town of Huntsville requires a Building Permit to be taken out when processing an application to connect to the District Water and/or Sewer. A permit to connect must be obtained first from the District of Muskoka, as it must accompany your application to the Town of Huntsville along with the necessary drawings.
